Vallot Hut at Sunrise
Vallot Hut at Sunrise
Photo: Dave Brinkman

Explanation: This picture, taken in 1985, shows the Vallot Hut (Observatoire Vallot) [CAF] at sunrise. The Hut is perched, at an altitude of 4362m, on an outcrop of rock just below the summit of Mont Blanc. It was erected in 1890 by Joseph Vallot as a place to carry out scientific studies at altitude and is currently used to study high altitude physiology and medicine [if you follow this link, scroll down to the article by Henriette Van Ruiten]. The CAF reasonably request that you do not enter the Hut, it is for EMERGENCY USE ONLY.
