Climbing in the Sun
263: Costa Blanca 18 - 25 Oct 2008
Print Version Top

Essential Information
Coordinator Sue Hodgkinson
Location Costa Blanca
5 Chamois and a friend of Linda’s spent a week on the Costa Blanca in April sussing out the area for the climbing meet in October. There are a number of good crags within easy reach of Calpe and we have decided to use this as our base. Trish, Nick, George and I are booked into the Topacio self catering apartments close to the Levante Beach. Apartments cost from £82 to £95 per person per week depending on how many people share. The apartments are for 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 people and have the usual facilities including a kitchen. Rather than contacting me to book for you please could you book on line at http://www.superbreak.com/go/IN635/hotels/apartments_topacio-hotel-11594.htm where you can also find information (with pictures) about the apartments.
If you fancy something a bit more expensive or want full or half board there are plenty of hotels etc. in the Levante Beach Area. We can still meet up to sort transport and climbing venues. I was able to access details about a range of accommodation using the above website. Any problems please let me know.
If you are definitely going on this meet please tell me as soon as possible and give me details of your flight and arrival time in Alicante. I will coordinate the car hire to fill cars and try and ensure people are not hanging around for too long at the airport.
While we were in Spain in April we sampled 4 climbing areas including one very close to Calpe which had enough routes graded 3, 4, 5 to keep us all going for the week. There were of course loads of harder routes. The Rock Fax Guide to Climbing in Costa Blanca has a lot of the climbs but new ones are constantly being added and these are often labelled on the rock with a name and grade. Although most of the routes are bolted there are some excellent lower grade traditional routes including a multi pitch VS on the Penon which is in Calpe itself. 2 half ropes are needed for trad climbs as you have to ab down 45m. pitches; otherwise a 60 m. single rope is recommended.
The climbing is in stunning locations, on clean, dry, warm limestone. The walking is also amazing as we discovered when we were finally climbed out. Rother and Cicero do walking guides to the area and I will ensure the club provides copies for the meet. Twitchers please note, I added 4 birds to my life list in and amongst other activities. If you need any more information about this meet please contact me.

Langdale Camp
263: Bays Brown Farm 8 - 10 Aug 2008
Print Version Top

Essential Information
Coordinator Nick Jeffery
Costs £4.00 per person (children £2.00), £2.00 per car
Facilities Spacious camping field; much improved toilet/shower block since we first used this site!
Location Bays Brown Farm campsite.
GR NY317053
Maps SW Lakes
Places Plenty, we hope
The campsite is approached through a gateway on the left of the main road through Chapel Stile village, about 300 metres after the pub. They don’t take advanced bookings; the approach is difficult for touring caravans (& probably impossible for large ones!)
Langdale offers lots of choice of activities: The Langdale Horseshoe is a classic walk, taking in the Langdale Pikes, Bowfell and Crinkle Crags among others, and can be done either complete or in part; and there is lots of choice of climbing or scrambling on the Langdale Pikes, including Gimmer Crag, Raven Crag, Scout Crag and lots more. Actual activities will depend on the weather and the inclinations of the party. There are also several nice pubs in Langdale.

SW Climbing Meet
263: Botallack, Cornwall 12 - 14 Sep 2008
Print Version Top

A long weekend camping meet primarily aimed at climbing on superb Cornish sea cliffs such as Bosigran and Chair Ladder. The campsite is conveniently situated within easy reach of both of these important climbing venues. All grades catered for but will particularly suit the easy to middle grade climber.
For those not keen on the vertical arena, there is excellent walking along the SW coast path as well as other attractions such as the beach at Sennen and other local points of interest.
