Lundy Island bunkhouse/camp
276: Bristol Channel 11 - 14 Sep 2010

Essential Information
Coordinator George May
Costs £26.50 total per person for 3 night’s Bunkhouse accommodation plus return ferry fare
Facilities Bunkhouse fully equipped for self-catering. Island shop with basic provisions. Pub serving meals

Location The Barn, Lundy Island
Maps OS Sheet 180 Barnstaple & Ilfracombe
Places 14 places booked in the Bunkhouse with the possibility of extra camping places if required
This will be the Chamois Club’s fourth visit to Lundy Island, a jewel set amidst the Bristol Channel with a unique atmosphere and some of the best sea-cliff climbing in the UK.

There is something for everybody here ranging from bracing walks covering the length of the island (approx 8 miles there and back!), birdwatching, snorkelling and of course the granite sea cliffs for which Lundy is justifiably famous.

For this meet we have booked the Barn which accommodates 14 people. If numbers exceed this it may still be possible to pre-book camping places independently through the above link or by contacting the Landmark Trust on 01628 825925.

Please note that it will be the responsibility of the individual to arrange camping as required, as will be the need to book return ferry places on the MS Oldenburgh at a cost of £56 per person. Note: ferry bookings will also have to be made personally by those staying in the Barn.

Due to the sailing schedule operating in September, we intend departing at 0830 on the morning of Saturday 11th September from Bideford, thereafter arriving back at Ilfracombe at 1800 on the evening of Tuesday 14th September. A transfer will be arranged to return us to our point of departure in Bideford.

This schedule effectively allows for a full afternoon’s activity on the day of arrival and also a significant period before returning on the afternoon sailing on the day of departure. This arrangement has worked well on previous visits.

An info sheet will be made available to attendees nearer the time.

Those wishing to attend should contact the meets booking secretary with the full accommodation fee being paid immediately.

George May

Agnes Spencer Memorial Hut is familiar to most of us and we have enjoyed many stays at this hut and the fantastic mountaineering opportunities that Patterdale offers.

The hut has a coke fired stove, showers, good washing facilities, a drying room, mattrazenlagen style sleeping accommodation and a well equipped kitchen with two electric cookers, a fridge, a freezer and a microwave oven.

There is limited car parking for a maximum of only 6 cars and strict instructions from Cleveland Mountaineering Club concerning the area where cars have to be parked. Please can members download the PDF file given above to ensure that they park within the correct area to ensure that Cleveland MC maintain good working relations with their neighbours.

Arrangements have been made for members who are continuing onto the meet at Glaramara to stay on Sunday evening. If you wish to stay on Sunday evening please inform and pay Alan direct - this booking is not part of Chamois’ booking and cannot be booked through Fil Arnott.

For those members wishing to eat out, the White Lion in Patterdale and the Travellers Rest in Glenridding are both within about 15 minutes walk.

Activities
As always these will depend to some extent on the weather but I intend to climb Hellvellyn via Striding Edge on Saturday continuing via Grisedale Tarn to Fairfield and St Sunday Crag then down to Patterdale.

On Sunday we can walk via Angle Tarn to High St returning via Thornthwaite Beacon and Threshthwaite Cove to Hartsop and Beckstones.

Alternately there is the old favourite ascent of Place Fell via Boredale Hause descending to Sandwick and along the East bank of Ullswater to the Hut.

I intend to arrive fairly early on the Friday so if anyone else also intends to arrive early please contact me or consult the Club website a day or two beforehand.

I will be staying at the hut on the Sunday night also and if anyone else wishes to do so please let me know. I will then be travelling to the Glaramara Centre on the Monday.

Glaramara revisited
276: Borrowdale, Lake District 11 - 15 Oct 2010
Print Version Top

Three days to relish this wonderful area!

We have full board for the duration so no need to worry about packed lunches – they will be provided. Breakfast is at 8.30 am which should suit everyone and evening dinner at 7.00 pm.

A Borrowdale programme from 1962, found by Marion in her tidybox, describes the weekly A and B walks. Some of them are quite challenging as we walked from and back to the house virtually all the time. We are proposing to have organised walks of different grades each day, possibly following some from the booklet, with a variety of leaders.

Nick has already agreed to do one. Do we have any more volunteers?

At the moment we are the only ones booked in at the centre and, even if another group books in nearer the time, the Management still think that we will be able to have some Scottish country dancing during the evening/s. Marion will bring along a player + CDs. Perhaps others might like to MC some dances? Feel free to come prepared to join in.

In the 1960s Borrowdale was known as a hard centre for long walks and energetic evenings. After a hard day on the hill ‘Strip the Willow and ‘Cumberland Hooligan’ to name just two, were danced to create enough warmth to counteract the freezing bedrooms where one could stroke the icicles on the ceiling from the top bunk! Even though we have the comforts of central heating now, the log fire in the lounge is always a welcome feature.

What was the quiet reading room is now the bar, some will be pleased to hear.

If anyone has any early photographs of club days or slides to show which might be of interest or amusement, please consider bringing them along with the vintage projector to show them!

Incidentally, can anyone remember the delectable Robin who played the guitar to a crowd in his bedroom?

Don’t forget the final payment is due at the end of August.

Jean Scholes, Marion and Robin Luscombe

Spanish meet
276: Calpe 08 - 18 Nov 2010
Print Version Top

Due to popular demand and in spite of volcanic ash activity, it is proposed that we re-visit the climbing areas within reach of Calpe, on the Costa Blanca.
The Paraiso Mar Apartments in Calpe make a very good base on the Levante beach.
I have contacted Jane Burton of Kwik Travel, who we booked with last year, to establish accommodation costs. They are as follows, for example:
Apartment for 2 (or for 3) with one bedroom is £252 per apt. for 10 nights
Apartment for 3 (or for 4) with two bedrooms is £322 per apt. for 10 nights
I have booked and paid my accommodation costs.
Anyone interested should contact me for further details. I will set up an email link for information and to organise sharing apartments and transport where necessary.
You will need to book your own accommodation, flights and car hire.
Jane Burton can be contacted on 0800 023 7434 or janeb@kwiktravel.com
There is plenty of enjoyable walking in the area too.
