Who We Are
The Chamois Mountaineering Club (C.M.C.) was founded in 1964. We have over 200 members from all over the Country. It is open to all and is run democratically by a committee elected by the membership. It is a member club of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) and is affiliated to the Ramblers Association.
Our Activities
Meets take place throughout the year, generally at weekends, though there are several longer ones as well. With a basis of summer and winter hill walking and scrambling, there will be rock climbing in summer and snow and ice climbing if winter conditions permit. Additional activities include downhill skiing and occasionally ski mountaineering, mountain biking, caving and orienteering. In 1976 we opened the Chamois Mountaineering Centre at Ceunant near Llanberis to provide accommodation for ourselves and for other groups who want to engage in mountain activities in Snowdonia.
Where do we go
Our Meets Programme is published annually. We meet at the Chamois Mountaineering Centre for the last full weekend of every month and bank holidays. A weekend meet is arranged in other mountain areas of the UK in the middle of each month, for example: Lake District, Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and Mid-Wales. We usually stay in hostel-type accommodation between October and April, and camp in the summer months. We visit the Scottish Highlands at Easter, and for the week which includes Spring Bank Holiday. Each winter there is a week-long downhill skiing meet in the Alps, and occasionally members go ski mountaineering in the spring. Groups of members often go walking and climbing in the Alps in the summer, and members have visited the greater ranges.
What’s going on
We are a friendly bunch, and taking part in Club activities is a great way to meet friends whose interests are similar to yours, and to increase your experience and expertise. The Club bulletin is emailed out to all members every month and gives details of arrangements for forthcoming meets, reports of recent meets, Club information and announcements. We have a yearly journal which compiles all the meets that have taken place in the year. The Members Only Section of this website gives up-to-the-minute information about meets and the booking situation at the Chamois Mountaineering Centre. Paid-up members can use the members-only accommodation at the Chamois Mountaineering Centre at any time without booking.
Members Benefits
We have sole usage at the end of every month of our fantastic property the Chamois Mountaineering Centre and members are able to stay at any time in the well equipped members end. We hold regular meets around the UK and also abroad. We also have access (via a reciprocal relationship) to the Cleveland Mountaineering Club's amazing hut the Agnes Spencer Memorial Hut in Patterdale. All club members are affiliated members of the BMC and benefit from the combined liability insurance policy. Lastly, we are a welcoming and fun bunch of people interested in mountaineering, climbing, walking and the outdoors in general.
